In 2007 Cindy Aggson, a friend of mine and fellow resident of Sherwood, OR started an event to bring the community together and help raise money for Helping Hands, a local food bank affiliated with the Oregon Food Bank.
Over the past 10 years it has raised $150,000 and truckloads of food and for Helping Hands. This single event funds Helping Hands’ annual expenses, enabling them to provide hundreds of needy families with not only canned food and other nonperishable items, but also dairy products, and fresh fruits and vegetables. It also funds the backpack program, which provides backpacks full of nutritious foods to children for them to take home over the weekend, to help make sure no child has to go to be hungry.
You can read more about the event at their website http://www.givengobble.com/our-story.html
Registration fees range from $25 for single participants who register before October 31 and $70 for families.
It is always cool to see members of a community get together. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays but it is often times overshadowed by Halloween and Christmas. It is a time to reflect on all the blessing we have in this country and remember what God has done for us. And, with the Give-n-Gobble, you can support a good cause, burn off some pre-meal calories and wear silly hats.
